Dark Red Hair Color Ideas That Just Hit Different

by Nisha Desai

I have been looking at dark red hair a lot lately. And it’s not just because of the current season (winter), although I do think that the cold seasons are just the PERFECT occasion to try out this color.

But also and mor eimportantly – it’s just such a pretty hair color! Don’t even get me started on the way it looks in natural daylight – there is something almost outwardly about that shine, honestly. Been saving tons of pictures and searching through my own camera roll (perks of being a hairdresser) and I wanted to show you what I found.

1. Deep Burgundy Red with Plum Undertones

This color are really pretty if you like dark cherry stuff with a bit of coolness to it. The plum part makes it look so stunning and fancy especially in sunlight. The picture says it all.

2. Dark Cherry Cola with Soft Dimension

This one looks like actual cherry cola! When the sun hits it you’ll see all these different colors. The highlights in lighter red shade add dimensions which makes it take good pictures – we love.

3. Blackened Red Balayage on Long Layers

Long hair looks so good with this balayage/red melt. The deep brunette base and red together is real edgy and fun looking. Your roots don’t show as much when they grow out so thats a plus!

4. Mahogany with Warm Undertones

Almost reminds me of like fancy furniture lol. The warm mahogany with red tones looks absolutely fabulous and real rich looking without being too much, too dark, or too bright.

5. Ruby Wine Face Framing Highlights

Everyone doing face framing ‘money-piece’ highlights now! And for a good reason, it’s such a simple and effective way to lighten and frame your face at the same time. This ruby color is so nice around your face and works wonders with the base color.

6. Plum-Red Blend

Plum and red mixed together just hits different – as you can see here. You get the deep plum but also that red vibe. Changes in different lights too (but always looks insanely cute).

7. Smoky Merlot with Muted Undertone

This one’s a statement shade but somehow also not too much in your face, if that make sense. Not super bright. The blue undertones make it look mysterious and interesting. Perfect shade for pin-straight hair to admire the glossy, almost metallic look.

8. Cranberry Tones with Bright Red Highlights

The bright red highlights (almost hot pink?) really pops against the cranberry base, it’s such a cute combo! Makes everything look more fun and edgy. It’s bold for sure but I think that’s the charm of it.

9. Dark Red Velvet on Sleek Bob

A bob (especially angled bob like here) with this color looks so good together. It’s modern. Real smooth and shiny. If you got short hair or thinking about a futuristic cool girl hairstyle – this is perfect.

10. Espresso Base with Dark Red Glaze

This one are sneaky cause the red isn’t super obvious, it’s kind of muted. The brown base is the reason for that and the darker shade of red hair color. It keeps it chill and the shade of red just gives a little something. A hard-to-define, mysterious girl vibe.

11. Deep Mulled Wine Hue

Ok I looove the whole look and vibe here – mulled wine hair color is just beautiful honestly. Super deep and rich looking? Works really good if you want a sultry, yet elegant look.

12. Dimensional Oxblood with Lowlights

Oxblood sounds scary maybe, but it looks amazing on hair, trust me. All the different babylights shades makes it more dimensional and therefore interesting to look at. Not flat at all.

13. Cherry Chocolate on Waves

Cherry chocolate sounds yummy and looks yummy (hope you agree)! On wavy hair you can see all the colors moving. This one’s on the brighter side, but still dark red category. Sweet but not like too sweet.

14. Rich Auburn-Red over Dark Base

Auburn undertone is kind of old school/classic but the red makes it feel new and cool. You get red hair but deeper, with some warmth to it. Would look good on anybody!

15. Berry Red with Chunky Slice Highlights

90s and y2k are so on-trend right now. Big chunky highlights is also coming back! The berry color with big pieces looks so 2000s but better. Fun and different for sure.

16. Sultry Dark Red with Cool Undertones

This one’s simply striking – cool colors makes dark red look really sultry. Less cozy more mysterious. Good if you got cool skin tone or just want something different than warm reds. This si almost a witchy vibe and we’re so here for it.

17. Maroon Red Highlights on Coily Curls

Maroon on curly hair is so so pretty! The highlights shine in the curls and makes everything look textured. Shows off natural curls and shade while adding pops of bold fun color.

18. Dark Wine Red with Cool Sheen

The tone and shine on this one makes it look real healthy. Super glossydeep red shade catches light and looks almost blue depending on lighting. Very cool and modern.

19. Cabernet Red with Bright Red Highlights

On this hairstyle, the cabernet color is deep and fancy then the bright red makes it exciting. The dark and bright together looks really cool. Best of both.

20. Black Cherry Red

Black cherry is a classic for a reason for sure! Darkest one on the list and super dramatic. Sometimes looks black then you see the red and its gorgeous.
