The Mysterious Trend of Blue Black Hair Color

by Mia Lopez

I’m loving the blue black hair color I’ve been doing a ton of at my salon recently! While the overall hair color is black, when the light hits it, you can clearly see the blue undertones. It’s almost like regular old black hair, but soooo much cooler! My Instagram feed is literally filled with blue black hair, and I totally understand why. Blue black has been around forever, however it’s currently “in” again! One of the coolest things about blue black is you can do it in an extremely subtle way or very boldly. Some of my clients prefer a light blue sheen that only appears when they’re outside in the sun, while others prefer that blue to scream loud and proud at everyone they pass on the street. Below are 20 different ways to wear this trend.

Classic Blue-Black Highlights

If you’re not ready to commit to all-over color, you can easily add some highlights! These will weave throughout your hair making it look great, especially with straight hair.

Indigo Dream All-Over

Indigo is probably my absolute fave! To achieve this all-over color, I dye the entire head of hair a beautiful purple-blue color. For those with long hair, it showcases the color beautifully since there’s more hair to play with.

Blue-Black Waves

Wavy hair is definitely a winner when it comes to this color! As light hits each wave, the blue and black colors blend together creating a beautiful, unique affect that is honestly really cool.

Subtle Blue-Black Balayage

For a more natural look, I use balayage. Instead of using foil to apply the color, I hand-paint it onto your hair. The result is a beautiful blue color that blends into your existing hair tone without being too overpowering.

Blue-Black Lob

Medium length hair (also known as a lob) is absolutely adorable! Adding some balayage highlights around your face creates a sweet look. Not too much color, not too little. Everyone looks fabulous with a lob, and the blue adds an extra wow factor!

Wavy Blue-Black Highlights

Even more highlights than the previous photo. With long wavy hair, it’s almost like mermaid hair… but darker. I have tons of clients who love this style, and it always turns heads!

Blue Ombre Magic

Whoa! This one is wild! Black hair on top and then teal hair on the bottom! You have to be careful with the teal part of the hair because it fades fast. But when it’s done fresh, it’s gorgeous! My bolder clients love this one.

Midnight Blue Waves

Midnight blue is really, really dark. Depending on how much light is hitting it, it may appear to be black hair, but once you step outside, BAM! There’s that blue! The wavy hair adds a softer element to it.

Cobalt Pop Highlights

Cobalt is bright! Way brighter than the rest of the blues. The straight hair really helps show off the pop of color. Since this color is a bit more high maintenance, you’ll need to visit me at the salon more frequently, but it’s a blast!

Dark to Bright Blue Ombre

Roots are darkest, then it starts getting lighter and bluer as it goes down. With straight hair, you can see the exact spot where each color transitions. It’s a dramatic look!

Deep Blue-Black Sheen

This one is simple looking but it’s not. The sheen to the hair makes it look super healthy! Even though the blue is hidden, you can still see it. Sometimes the simplest things are the best.

Navy Blue-Black Hair

Super long hair and navy blue black is my jam! Navy is slightly warmer than other shades of blue-black, and while it’s still professional enough for work, it’s also cooler than traditional black hair.

Subtle Navy Blue-Black Waves

Navy blue-black hair with wavy locks gives it a completely different vibe than straight! The waves help move the color around so you see it catching the light differently. Great for both formal events and everyday activities.

Midnight All-Over Color

To get the entire head dyed, I use midnight blue black dye. The wavy hair brings it alive, and it takes great photos, which many of my clients are concerned about today.

Midnight Balayage Highlights

Balayage is a technique where I hand-paint the highlights onto your hair using midnight blue black. More natural than coloring the entire head of hair, and it fades nicely so you don’t have to visit me at the salon as often.

Pure Bold Blue and Black

Straight-up midnight blue-black hair! No tricks, no techniques – just pure blue-black hair. The wavy hair is the only thing keeping it interesting!

Navy Sheen Mystery

Love this one! Navy catches the light differently than midnight blue. The balayage adds a nice flow to the color through the hair.

Blue Black Pop

Similar to the last one, but with larger highlights. You see big chunks of navy blue rather than small specks. Still blends nice. More bold.

Royal Blue Ombre

Black roots, royal blue ends. Royal blue is super bright! It gets a lot of attention. The wavy hair makes that transition from black to blue look even cooler.

Steel Blue Balayage

Steel blue is a grayish blue. It’s a different look! On straight hair you can see exactly where I painted it. A cool-toned hair color that looks great.
