Gorgeous Long Hairstyles for Women Over 50

by Nisha Desai

I’ve been doing hair forever and women always tell me they gotta cut it short after 50. Who said that?

Long hair looks good at any age! Period. And I’ve actually seen some of the prettiest long hairstyles on my clients over 50.

There’s tons of ways to wear long hair whether you’re keeping it natural with salt and pepper hair or adding color. Here’s some styles I love!

1. Soft Layers with Curtain Bangs for Crown Lift

I do this one all the time. Works on pretty much everyone and the layers make your hair move nice without getting choppy, those bangs frame your face real good. Crown lift helps when hair gets flat which happens to all of us.

2. Long Sleek Dark Brown Hair with Babylights

Babylights are tiny highlights. They add stuff to your hair without being too much, when you do them with dark brown sleek hair it look so nice and fancy. You gotta keep it healthy with protein treatments, hair masks and maybe a little hair oil.

3. Beachy Waves with Face-Framing Pieces

Love this! The pieces around your face are colored in lighter shade and it shows off your face better. Beachy waves make it casual and easy, perfect if you don’t want nothing too fancy.

4. Voluminous Dark Blonde Blowout with Rounded Ends

This one’s fancy. Good blowout makes hair full and those round ends are bouncy, dark blonde don’t look harsh and it goes good with older skin.

5. Long Bouncy Hair with Texture

Sometimes you want bouncy hair. That’s what this is about – texture and moving around, I use mousse and round brush to get bounce, then curl the ends a bit with curling iron. Makes hair look youthful and healthy.

6. Layers with Flipped Ends on Chestnut Brown

Flipped ends are fun! Kind of old school but modern too. Layers stop it from being heavy, chestnut brown is warm and pretty. Got personality.

7. Natural Gray with Airy Texture

Going gray is cool and when you style it to add some texture it looks really good. Texture/volume stops it from being flat because we know hair can get dull sometimes, I tell everyone gray hair is pretty and this shows it.

8. Side-Swept Layers for Movement and Volume

Side parts are big again. You get movement and volume on one side with layers, easy way to change your look. Layers make it not look flat. Beautiful!

9. Cascading Silver Layers with Flicked Ends

Silver white hair is so pretty specially with layers going down. Flicked ends are playful and it’s not too serious, lots of dimension and looks amazing in light.

10. Long Copper Waves with Bounce

Copper is bright and warm, when you add waves and bounce it’s absolutely stunning no matter the age. This color makes your face brighter and waves are soft. Everyone will look!

11. Straight Lengths with Bottleneck Bangs and Highlights

Bottleneck bangs are thin at top and bigger at bottom/toward the sides. They look good on most people and with straight hair plus highlights you get modern vibes, sleek but interesting.

12. Layered Cut with Balayage

Balayage is painted on by hand yet looks natural like sun did it. With layered cut you get depth that make hair look full, less work than regular highlights.

13. Feathered Ends for Airy, Lightweight Feel

On this style the feathered ends are cut in angle so they get that light airy texture. Good if your hair is heavy because it takes weight out but keeps length, gives soft finish.

14. Soft Brown Layers with Crown Volume and Curtain Bangs

Crown volume lifts your face! Add curtain bangs and soft brown, you got something young looking and classy. Layers keep it balanced.

15. Long Cherry Brown Braids with Curls

If you want to mix it up with your braids, go for cherry brown color that’s got some purple in it which is sooo pretty, braiding with curls left out adds fun texture.

16. Sleek Natural Gray Hair

Simple is good sometimes. Sleek gray hair long is elegant, you gotta keep it healthy so it looks good on purpose. Gloss treatment will make straight hair look amazing.

17. Voluminous Layers with Flipped 90s Ends

90s are back! Flipped ends were everywhere then and coming back now. Big layers make it modern not old looking, fun with personality.

18. Tousled Blonde Beachy Waves

Blonde beachy waves are easy and pretty. Tousled makes it look like you didn’t try hard like vacation hair, good if you want low work but still nice.

19. Minimal Layers with Blunt Hemline

Want hair to look thick? Blunt hemline does it. Less layers keeps weight at bottom so hair looks healthy, clean and modern looking.

20. Silver Blonde Extra Long Hair

Extra long silver blonde is beautiful. Takes work to grow your hair that long and maintain the length but worth it. Color is special and length is gorgeous.

21. Butterfly Layers with Bouncy Lift and Money Pieces

Butterfly layers are short on top long on bottom. Makes pretty cascading effect, money pieces (highlights by your face) brighten the face and take the look to the next level. Bouncy lift makes everything full – butterfly cut is always my favorite thing to do – clients love it!

22. Salt and Pepper Hair with Layers and Side Part

Salt and pepper is that classic natural hair look. Gray mixed with your color makes dimension by itself, layers and side part give shape. Looks good!

23. Long Black Hair with Bangs and Face-Framing Layers

Long black hair is dramatic, but the bangs and layers by face makes it softer and shows your eyes, contrast is striking.

24. High Contrast Natural Salt and Pepper Hair

Lots of gray with dark hair makes high contrast. Looks cool and bold, wearing it long shows all the dimension. Embrace gray!

25. Smooth Lengths with Curled Ends

Classic style. Keep hair smooth and curl just ends, you get polish without being fussy. Works for anything.

26. Long Ash Blonde Hair with Root Shadow

Ash blonde is cool blonde looks fancy. Root shadow means roots stay dark which is easy and gives depth, pretty and dimensional.

27. Wispy Layers with Highlights and Volume

Wispy layers are light so hair moves a lot. With highlights and volume you get soft girly style, texture but not messy.

28. Natural Silver with Long Face-Framing Pieces

Natural silver is pretty and long pieces by face show your features. About embracing natural color with good cut for your face.

29. Natural Brown with Babylights and Face-Framing Pieces

Keeping natural brown? Babylights add bright without big change. Face pieces keep it interesting and show your face, easy refresh.

30. Lived-In Blonde with Textured Ends

Lived-in color looks natural and grows out nice. Perfect for busy, textured ends give beachy casual vibe. Low work but pretty.

31. Long Sleek Dark Hair with Invisible Layers

Invisible layers add movement and take weight without showing. Hair still looks long and sleek but got better shape. Subtle.

32. Honey Blonde with Natural Silver Streaks and Flipped Ends

Unique! Honey blonde is warm gold and natural silver streaks make it multi-tonal. Flipped ends are playful and fun.

33. Elegant Soft Brown with Low Contrast Highlights

Low contrast highlights are subtle and natural. Blend with your color good so you get dimension without it being obvious, elegant and quiet.

34. Loose Waves with Honey Highlights Throughout

Honey highlights are warm and sweet. Loose waves make it pretty and soft with movement, color catches light nice. Romantic and warm.

35. Flowing Layers with Dimensional Coloring

Dimensional coloring uses different shades for depth. Flowing layers let colors show through, makes hair look full. It’s a winner for sure!

36. Romantic Soft Auburn Brown Waves

Auburn got red undertones pretty in soft waves. Romantic and girly, color is rich and warm. Good if you want more than plain brown.
