I’ve been looking at long layered haircuts a lot lately, both in my own camera roll from spending years behind chair in the salon and on social media. They’re really popular right now!

If you have thick hair or thin hair or whatever in between, and you have length, there’s probably a style here that will work. Check out this list of 40+ long layered haircuts ideas and you’ll definitely be booking that hairstylist apointment!
Face-Framing Layers in Light Brown

This one is good if you’re scared to get too many layers and lose volume or length. The swoopy pieces around your face are shorter but the back still stays long. Light brown with lowlights makes it look soft and pretty. Your cheekbones and jaw look better without doing a big change to all your hair.
U-Shaped Voluminous Blonde Cut

So the back still maintains the length and then gradually it gets shorter with the top layers. The cut makes a U shape in the back hence the name! Blonde hair feathered this way makes this look super big and bouncy, I love it. Good for when you want to keep your hair long but need some shape happening.
Long Fine Blonde Layers

My hair is on the fine side so I get it when you want it long but also want it to look fuller. Long layers help a lot! They make your hair move around more and don’t make it look thinner which is good. Blonde color with sunny shiny highlights makes it look like theres more hair there too by creating dimensional look.
Lightly Curled Subtle Face Framing Layers

This looks so easy even though its very much purposeful. The brunette shade is really pretty by itself. Add some layers around your face and curl them just a little bit and wow! Looks like you just woke up like that but really it probably took forever with a curling iron, at least for me it does.
Face-Framing Cascade

So these layers start near the cheekbones and fall forward around the face. I love doing this cut so much because it makes everyone look better right away. The trick is blending them smooth so there’s no harsh line anywhere. Round faces, square faces, it works on pretty much all of them. Just blow dry the front sections forward with a round brush and you are done.
The Shag Revival

This cut is having such a big moment and I am completely here for it. Choppy layers everywhere plus that fun fringe at the front. I always tell clients their hair needs at least a little wave or texture to really carry this well. The messier the better honestly. Scrunch some sea salt spray in when it’s damp and just leave it alone.
Feathered Long Layers

I use a razor for this and the ends come out so wispy and light you almost can’t believe it. Fine hair especially loves this because it finally gets real movement. Styling is genuinely easy, a little mousse and that’s it. The layers separate by themselves as it dries. It catches light in this really beautiful way that clients always notice.
Curtain Bangs With Long Layers

Everyone wants this combo right now, I see it every week in my chair without fail. Middle part, bangs that sweep out toward the cheeks, long layers underneath. The growing-out phase is so much easier than regular bangs because they just blend right in. Two minutes with a round brush in the morning and you are actually done. It frames the whole face front to back at the same time.
Long Black Wolf Cut with Bangs

Wolf cuts are everywhere now. Its kinda like a shag cut but cooler and more edgy looking? With black hair and bangs it looks really striking because you can see all the choppy layers. Gotta style this one though to make it look ‘messy on purpose’ instead of messy in a bad way.
Graduated Layers on Dark Brown Hair

Each layer is a bit shorter then the one under it. Creates this smooth waterfall thing! On dark brown hair you really see how much dimension it gives. Its classic, doesn’t go out of style. I like this cut for high volume hair clients.
The Invisible Layer Cut

Nobody can see these layers from the outside but you can feel them when you run your fingers through. I take weight out from underneath so the top surface stays totally smooth and sleek. Thick-haired clients always leave my chair so happy after this one. It kills the heaviness without changing how the length looks at all. Flat iron it for a glass-smooth finish.
Long V-Cut Layers

The back of the hair comes to a point in the middle and rises up on both sides. Straight hair really shows off the V shape the best in my experience. I think it looks so intentional and cool, especially from behind. It also makes the hair look longer than it actually is, which every single client loves. Finish with a shine spray to let that angle catch the light properly.
Beachy Waves With Long Layers

Layers and waves were honestly made for each other and I will say that forever. Because each layer falls a different way, the waves look totally random and natural. I wrap sections around a big barrel wand and drop them immediately, no clamping the ends. Run fingers through once it’s cool. Use texturizing spray, not hairspray, so everything stays soft and touchable.
Long Layers for Curly Hair

Always cut curly hair dry, that is the single most important thing I can say about this. Wet cutting pulls the curl straight and then you have no idea where anything will actually land. What layers do is fix that wide triangle shape curly hair gets as it grows out. Weight gets removed from underneath and the curls start stacking in a much nicer, longer column shape. Rake some curl cream through after washing and diffuse on low heat.
Blended Long Layers for Transitioning Hair

Growing out a short cut or a color you no longer like and can’t fully cover is genuinely rough and I have helped so many people get through it. Layers blend the short bits into the longer bits so the whole shape looks like it was planned. You still come in occasionally but only to refine the shape, not to lose any length. Good styling products make everything look way more intentional during this stage. A serum or smoothing cream is your best friend right now.
Subtle Butterfly Cut

The butterfly cut is kinda making waves right now and is super pretty. Shorter layers on top and around your face, longer underneath – like butterfly wings I guess? The subtle one is perfect if you don’t wanna go crazy with the layers.
Brown Feathered Layers with Highlights

Feathered layers are so soft and wispy. They flow nice! Add highlights to brown hair and you get this sun-kissed look. Everything blends together with the feathering so theres no weird lines or anything.
High Volume Dark Hair with Long Layers

Dark hair can look flat sometimes. These layers fix that problem fast though! You need layers all through your hair that lift it up, especially on top of your head. Great if you don’t wanna cut your hair short but need more volume.
Straight Layers with Blonde Highlights

Something about straight layered waterfall style hair with blonde highlights just looks really polished from the back. Even when its straight the layers make it move. Highlights give it serious depth. This works for like any time you need to look put together.
Invisible Face Framing Layers

So these are called “invisible” because they blend so good you can barely tell where the layers are. Your face looks framed but its subtle! Adds movement without being choppy. Perfect if you want layers but don’t want it obvious.
Dark Brunette Layered Back

The back view matters too you know! This shows how pretty feathered layers look from behind on a cool dark brunette color. That cascading thing down your back looks so good. Dark brunette really shows off the flowy movement.
Voluminous Layers on Copper Hair

Copper or auburn hair already gets attention but add layers and whoa. The layers lift your hair up from your head and make it look really full and bouncy. Copper looks amazing when the layers move because you see all the shine and different shades light creates!
Bouncy Layers with Caramel Highlights

This gives me cozy vibes! Layers are cut to make it a bit bouncy, but still quite understated. Caramel highlights add warmth and it all looks so pretty together. The kind of hair that seems alive in the best way.
Side-Swept Layers with Chunky Highlights

Side-swept hair with layers looks really good on most people. When you add chunky highlights theres this cool contrast thing. Chunky highlights are coming back and I’m here for it because they add so much! Just go to someone good because chunky can look outdated if done wrong.
Fiery Copper with Front Layers

Fiery copper is bold. Put front layers with it and its a look! The layers around your face really show the color off good. Definitely a statement but like in a good way not a bad way.
Long Cascading Layers with Balayage

I love balayage or highlights in combination with layers because it highlights them even better. With long layers that cascade down you get this flowing thing where the color and cut look perfect together. The layers show all the pretty colors in the balayage.
Wispy Bangs with Feathered Layers

Wispy bangs aren’t as scary as regular bangs but still frame your face nice. Put feathered layers with them and its soft and romantic looking. The wispy part keeps it light not heavy.
Textured Ends with Graduated Layers

The ends have texture which makes the bottom interesting. Mix that with layers all through and you get tons of movement happening! Good if your hair is flat usually because the texture and layers make it bigger naturally.
Long Brunette Layers with Face-Framing Piece

Classic brunette, classic layers. But those pieces around your face change everything! They make people look at your face and add shape. You don’t need to do some dramatic cut. Elegant and easy to style which I appreciate.
Bottleneck Bangs with Layered Ends

These bangs are shorter at the top by your forehead and get longer as they go down. Like a bottle neck shape thats why they call it that! With layers through the rest it looks balanced and modern. Bangs add interest, layers add movement. Very on-trend.
Soft Angled Layers with Flipped Ends

The flipped ends make this playful and kinda retro which I’m into. Soft layers give you shape. The flip at the bottom adds personality you know? You can flip it with a round brush when you dry it or use a flat iron.
Shaggy Layers with Curtain Bangs

Shaggy layers are messy here but in a good way. Curtain bangs are like the most flattering bangs ever I think! Together its effortlessly cool and works for lots of face shapes. Does need styling though so it looks messy on purpose not by accident.
Long Butterfly Layers with Highlights

Butterfly cut on long hair is so pretty especially with highlights. The shorter stuff on top makes volume, longer stuff underneath keeps your length. Highlights make it even more dimensional then it already is from the cut. Just a stunning look!
Choppy Layers with Beachy Waves

Want that California beach girl look? This is it right here. Choppy layers give texture. Style into beachy, slightly messy waves and its so good! Use a curling wand or braid your damp hair before bed for the waves.
Soft Layers with Ash Brown Highlights

Ash brown is a pretty cool-toned color. Looks gorgeous with soft layers! The layers add movement but not too dramatic. Ash highlights make it modern and edgy. Its sophisticated but still young looking.
Swoopy Medium Long Layers with Face-Framing

Swoopy layers are about that curved flowing movement. On medium or long hair with pieces framing your face its really feminine and flattering! The swoop adds dimension and your hair looks fuller then it is.
Shaggy Layers with Curtain Bangs

Yeah I know this is like number 23 but listen, shaggy layers and curtain bangs need another mention. So many ways to style it! Works with basically any hair type. Its super popular right now and I totally get why.
Natural Layers with Subtle Highlights

Sometimes less is more right? Natural layers that just follow how your hair grows. Add subtle highlights and you get this effortless lived-in look. Perfect if your not trying to make a statement but still want nice hair that looks intentional.
Razor-Cut Layers with Texture

Razor cutting makes really soft textured ends. Lots of movement! Its different from scissors because it makes things feathery naturally. If your hair is thick this can help thin it while adding texture and shape which is nice.
Waterfall Layers with Honey Highlights

Last one! Waterfall layers cascade down like an actual waterfall. Each layer you can see flowing into the next one. Honey highlights make it warm and glowy looking. Its beautiful and definitely makes a statement when you walk in somewhere.
